Jiu Jitsu, the first Hollywood film to be shot entirely in Cyprus, has picked up for distribution by Paramount Home Entertainment, and made its way into the top ten of the most watched films on Netflix USA and Canada only 48 hours after its release.
“The distribution of the film through Paramount Home Entertainment not only exemplifies the quality of our independent film but gives Cyprus the opportunity to promote itself as a unique film destination.” Logothetis.
Jiu Jitsu was the first film to use tax-payer money in a government cash rebate scheme – Cyprus Cash Rebates, aimed at promoting the making of films on the Mediterranean island.
Jiu Jitsu producer says Cage film only the beginning for Cyprus. Demetris Logothetis, producer and director of Jiu Jitsu, already has plans and is in the final preproduction stages for Man of War, a second movie to be shot in Cyprus and to be distributed by Highland Film Group in association with Avenue Entertainment.
Cyprus wants to be a film industry contender
The Cyprus government wants to cut red tape that keeps film producers at bay, with a new bill in parliament aimed at attracting foreign companies that could choose the island for the next blockbuster. The bill tries to simplify the application process and offer up to 50% in discounts and credits for the producers in return of investing locally in facilities and equipment and additional jobs in Cyprus.
